"Product Review: XT Brace

This week we take a moment to review a new kind brace, one that works both to stabilize you and heal you.

Item: XT Braces

Price: $22.00 - $35.00

As an avid CrossFit-er and a former collegiate athlete, I know what it takes to heal your body after tearing it down on the field. Rest and recover is such a crucial part to athletic performance, and that’s why I’m doing a Product Review over this amazing brace I’ve found!
Lately, I’ve been icing my joints at night, and heating them in the morning. I recently upped my training and my body is definitely feeling it. I ran across this product in a local Cabela’s when I was looking for something to wrap my ice packs onto. The XT Brace is not only a stability brace, but it comes equipped with an insertable ice pack/heat pack! I thought I’d buy it to only use for my heating/icing problems, but it may be my favorite brace … ever.

The Good

The XT Brace was created by members in U.S. Intelligence while in the field, and built for athletic performance. With products for your knees, thighs, calves, shin, hamstring, wrists and elbows; they have almost every joint in the book covered.
I tired on the knee sleeve and wrist wraps. When you first slip on the sleeve it’s snug enough to noticeably give your joints support. I recently hurt my wrist lifting, but with the wrist brace my wrist is stronger and more usable than it has been in months! I’m telling you guys, these braces are worth giving a try.

Even better, I used the knee brace on my bad knee and during our lifting session, and I was completely pain free. Right after my lifting session ended I grabbed my ice pack  out of the freezer and threw it in the brace. An instant ice pack that won’t fall off my knee?! Magic. I drove home, already recovering from my session without even taking extra time out of my day. The ice gel pack fit perfectly in a special pocket that gives you the comfort of the cold without freezer burn.

The Bad

Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything bad about this product… I usually have one or two words of advice to my readers, but I didn’t get any blisters from using the braces (even ankle!) They don’t smell bad postworkout, nor are they weak in any points and adjustable for almost all sizes.

That about wraps up my Product Review on Brace. f you have any questions on the product feel free to ask in the comment section below!

Doctors Love Our Braces!

We at Wasatch Foot & Ankle institute began using XT braces about a year ago after finding them through our own internet search. We were looking for something we could distribute to all of our postoperative patients to help with their comfort and therapy. We purchased a few braces to trial and were amazed with the results.

We quickly found many more uses for them than just our postoperative patients. They are now a standard part of our care for anyone who comes in with ankle sprains, tendonitis, muscle aches and pains, and are a must for anyone who doesn’t have the time or energy to deal with conventional bracing that doesn’t offer ice/heat options and are difficult to fit around foot/ankle anatomy.

We are constantly surprised by the new uses we find for the braces. Before we had them we found ourselves constantly trying to explain what we wanted patients to do at home and leaving it up to them to figure out how to get it done. Of course this led to poor compliance and sub-optimal results. Now we can dispense the brace, inform the patient of the exact therapy we want them to use (i.e. heat or cold). This has greatly increased patient compliance and satisfaction.

XT braces are well-built, well thought out therapeutic braces perfect for the clinical environment. They are affordable, eye pleasing, and most importantly they help patients get the care we as physicians need and want for them.

We have tried several different options but none have afforded us the convenience, cost savings, and patient satisfaction that XT braces have provided for us. XT has a consumer/customer for life at Wasatch Foot & Ankle Institute!

Even Doctors Love Our Braces! Posted on our Facebook Page on May 30, 2016.

Just wanted to say a quick thank you regarding your braces. After my wife had a baby, I've been MIA from the gym for about a year. Just went back and, as expected, have quite a bit of soreness from the layoff. Your hot/cold braces have been great for post-work out recovery!

As a physician and surgeon, I can attest to the simplicity and perfect fit of these braces. I've already started telling friends and patients about them. Great job!

The full review is below:

As your resident glass-ankled WearTester, I had the opportunity to test out the ankle XT BRACE these past weeks. As I crossed up others and undoubtedly got crossed myself while hounding opponents end to end, I formulated an opinion on the brace’s performance on-court, and more importantly, off-court (more on that later).

So who is XT BRACE? What do they stand for? Where did they come from? Listen up (or read here).

XT BRACE was created by U.S. Intelligence Officers to address a problem with sustaining sprained knees and ankles while deployed in remote regions of the world. When working in rugged terrain and strenuous conditions there is little to no access or time for medical care and attention.

Missions have to continue despite joint pain, muscle strains, and twisted ankles. To a much less serious degree, so to does your job…or your Thursday night city league games.

I had a chance to run a few games of soccer and quite a bit of basketball wearing the brace, as well as spend time both icing and heating my tender ankles after the fact. So how was the ankle brace? I’ll break it into two categories, active and recovery.

Fit: Well, it goes on easy and fast with a simple two strap system (rare for an ankle brace). It is one size fits most for both men and women and it will undoubtedly fit in every pair of shoes with the exception of the new wave of high flyknit collared models. Though I had no issues with fit, I do think small, narrower feet would not have the same compression and snug fit through the arch/midfoot where there are no straps present.

There is one wide strap just above the ankle bone and another narrower velcro strap right below at your achilles heel (you have no shot, Paris). Both of them wrap around the back and can be pulled as far as your heart desires since the velcro sticks to all of the brace’s outer material. The velcro straps and outer material allow you to manipulate and angle the straps to whatever tightness and configuration that works for you.

Support: If you have shaky, atrophied ankles without the proprioception to keep you from re-injury, the ankle XT BRACE is not for you. It is a compression brace that promotes heat retention, improved circulation and maybe a sliver of extra confidence. Do not expect this brace to keep your ankles locked up and safe when you land on someone’s foot on your Euro-step.

It’s primary function is to support your recovery process and healing. If you really tighten up the straps it will provide some support to the ankle. I found it performed very well on the soccer field, where ankle injuries are less common, in regards to comfort and not affecting my trapping and kicking.

Comfort: The brace is superbly comfortable, on and off court, I hardly knew it was there. Though the outside is a rougher material to allow the velcro to stick, the inside is a smooth neoprene. I could have worn toe socks and would not have experienced any abrasion or discomfort. This is especially nice in the recovery role when you are barefooted in some slides or in your house with the gel pack ice cold and inserted for recovery….which brings me to perhaps the best part of the XT BRACE and the reason the product was originally conceived….

We’ve all heard it from our physical therapist, doctor, significant other, teammates, coaches, trainers, etc. — ice that ankle! 20 minutes on and off! R.I.C.E.! I could go on, but we all know it’s not easy to stop everything and carefully balance that bag of frozen peas on your ankle for a half hour. This is where the ankle XT BRACE steps into the spotlight.

The product includes a custom, butterfly shaped nylon gel pack that can either be frozen or heated for maintenance and recovery. The gel pack slides into place in a barely noticeable polyester pouch on the inside of the brace. You don’t know the pocket is there when you’re actively using the brace, but you are SO thankful for it once it’s time to ice. The gel pack forms perfectly around your outer ankle and midfoot. The thin polyester pocket material takes away any freezer burn feeling and allows you to through the brace on barefoot at whatever tightness you desire.

I tweaked my ankle during the testing process when I landed on a foot on a rebound in traffic and the XT BRACE icing system suddenly became a necessity. It was only a minor tweak, but I was able to get multiple sessions icing my ankle morning and night as I continued to function normally throughout my apartment. I wasn’t bound to balancing frozen broccoli on just the right spot on my ankle. When the gel pack went warm (usually after about 30 minutes), I threw it in the freezer and left the brace on, ready to throw it right back in for another 20-30 minute session.

It will fit you, it will be comfortable, it will provide a little bit of support and compression, and it absolutely will facilitate better icing and heating treatments to your ankle. The ankle XT BRACE is a very well made product with a niche capability. The brace retails at $25 USD and can be found at Cabela’s, Rogue Fitness, and on their website, here: http://www.xtbrace.com/products/ankle-xt-brace-with-hotcold-gel-pack

The great minds behind the company told me that another design is in the works that will incorporate a pocket and gel pack to ice around the back of the ankle/achilles/heel. They also have products with the same type of construction and functionality for the thigh, knee, elbow, wrist, and calf on their website. So if you have other nagging joints and muscles, you may want to consider XT BRACE to help manage pain.

Ever Wanted A's Across The Board While You Were In School? Well XT BRACE Just Got A's All Across the Board from Total Sports Blog!

Thanks TotalSportsBlog (www.totalsportsblog.com) for the great review of our product! We aced it with A's across the board on the review! You can check out the review here http://www.totalsportsblog.com/…/shin-calf-forearm-xt-bra…/…

Here is a sample of what Total Sports Blog had to say:

"Later, shin splints.  I had the pleasure of trying out the Shin, Calf and Forearm XT Brace with Hot/Cold Gel Pack from XTBrace.com.

As someone who has dealt with shin splints on and off for the past 16 years, the Shin, Calf and Forearm XT Brace with Hot/Cold Gel Pack from XTBrace.com was a godsend.  Had they never reached out to me, I wouldn’t have found the product I had always wanted, but never knew existed.  Something that can be worn while working out and used to treat pain afterwards is nothing short of amazing.  The XT Brace is constructed well, made of high quality materials, and gets straight A’s across the board.

Highly adjustable, highly comfortable, and highly recommended.

While I tried the XT Brace on my forearm, and it fit just fine, I’ve never had a need for a forearm brace so I pretty much only put it to good use on my shin.  I have above-average sized calves (25 years of soccer will do that) so I was worried the XT Brace would fly off and hit someone in the eye once I started running.  Thankfully, it didn’t, and I was able to run in comfort for once.  The pain I usually feel in my legs wasn’t noticeable.  I wish I had two of these to wear at the same time.

I was really worried the XT Brace wouldn’t fit with the gel pack inserted, but sure enough, it stretched and fit just fine.  The compression combined with the cold gel pack really helped with my recovery (I wore it on the opposite leg), and again, I just wish I had two of them to try out at the same time.

Using the gel pack as a heat pad makes me nervous, though.  The last thing I want is this thing blowing up in my microwave.  I went with the hot water heating method, which worked just fine.  Personally I feel cold therapy helps with my issues more than heat therapy, so I didn’t do more than one trial using the pad as a heating pad.  To each their own.

If you’re in the market for a brace and gel pack combo, you can’t go wrong with XT Brace.  I really can’t recommend this thing enough."
